19th c Georgian token Jackson & Lister Barnsley weaving: A Georgian Penny token: "Payable at Jackson & Listers Warehouse Barnsley" The following information is taken from "Trade Tokens" by J.R.S. Whiting, an extract of which is on line at: http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/Indexes/TOKEN.txt Jackson and Lister are recorded as "Makers of bleached linen in 1811". Barnsley was a principle centre for weaving in the 18th and 19th centuries. On the reverse side of the coin there is a good stamped image of a person weaving at a hand loom. The image is interesting because it seems to show a loom being used without a Jacquard loom attachment. Jacquard's loom attachment utilized interchangeable punched cards that controlled the weaving of the cloth so that any desired pattern could be obtained automatically. It would seem that th...
